Polk County, FL (6/7/2020) – One woman died and several other people were injured after a crash involving five vehicles on I-4 Thursday morning. The accident happened around 6:40 a.m. just east of US 98.
The Florida Highway Patrol states that a 22-year-old Lakeland woman was driving her sedan west on I-4 when she attempted to change lanes. The rear of her sedan hit the front right bumper of a car driven by a 38-year-old Orlando man, causing both cars to crash into the median.
The Lakeland woman’s car then broke the barrier and hit a pickup truck driving in the eastbound lanes of the interstate head-on. A car driven by a 55-year-old man from Port Charlotte attempted to avoid the crash but was hit by a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then hit the pickup truck, causing it to travel across the median.
Emergency responders rushed the Lakeland woman to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The 55-year-old driver of the pickup only suffered minor injuries, but his 44-year-old and 48-year-old passengers were seriously injured. A 55-year-old woman from Port Charlotte was also seriously injured in the crash. The Charlotte man, however, only suffered minor injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident. Eastbound lanes of I-4 were closed until around 10:46 a.m. while crews worked the scene.
