Madeira Beach, FL (5/23/2020) – A bicyclist is in critical condition after colliding with a garbage truck on Saturday morning. The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on Gulf Boulevard near John’s Pass.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old Julie Henning was riding her bike north on Gulf Boulevard in the bike lane when a garbage truck driven by 38-year-old John Leppert crossed into the path of the bike to turn onto 129th Avenue West. Henning couldn’t stop her bike in time since she was going downhill and hit the passenger side of the truck. Witnesses say she was ejected from the bike on impact.

Emergency responders transported Henning to the trauma center at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where she is in critical condition. Investigators say that she was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but did not say if Leppert would face any charges. The investigation is currently ongoing.
