Tampa, FL (1/9/2020) – On Thursday morning, a truck driver struck and killed a jogger on Bayshore Boulevard. The accident took place at around 11:13 a.m. just north of Bayshore and West Julia Street.
The jogger, whose name has not been released, was running along the walkway when Benjamin Douglas Ehas, 31, hit him. The impact threw the jogger over the balustrade into the Hillsborough Bay. Ehas stumbled out of his vehicle and onto the ground.
A few bystanders jumped into the water to save the jogger. Firefighters rushed him to the hospital once they arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, the jogger died of his injuries.
Investigators suspected that alcohol was involved in the accident. Upon testing, Ehas had a blood alcohol level of 0.234, which is nearly three times the legal limit in Florida. Tampa Police arrested Ehas late Thursday night for DUI, manslaughter, and vehicular homicide.
