Tampa, FL (2/13/2020) – The family of a 14-year-old girl killed while crossing the street two weeks ago has decided to press charges against the responsible driver.

At 7:15 p.m. on January 31, Nakeeba Ryan, 24, struck and killed Asucena Gomez-Hernandez, 14, near the intersection of 15th Street and 122nd Avenue. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ryan after she fled the scene of the accident.

Gomez-Hernandez’s family is taking steps to file a lawsuit against Ryan and possibly her mother, who owns the blue Chevy Equinox involved in the accident. The family’s attorney, Gil Sanchez, also states that the county should better maintain crosswalks at the intersection to prevent future tragedies. There have been 18 other accidents at the intersection in the past four years.

Ryan currently faces a first-degree felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving a death, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
