Driving under the influence (DUI) is a serious offense in Florida. An offender may be impaired as a result of ablood alcohol content of .08 and above or drug consumption. DUI drivers can cause serious, even deadly DUI crashes.

Some cities have higher rates of DUI crashes than others. A recent study found that four cities in the Tampa Bay area rank among the ten deadliest for DUI crashes in Florida. The study found that overall Florida had 515 fatal crashes involving alcohol in 2017.

Sarasota ranked number one as the Florida city with the most fatal DUI crashes. The city had a per capita rate of deaths of 12.2 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents. This makes the city twice as deadly per capita than the next deadly city, Lakeland. Not only does Sarasota rank number one, it’s rate of deadly DUI crashes has increased 73% over the last three years. This is a staggering rate of increase given the heightened awareness of preventing DUIs and the availability of rideshare programs.

Lakeland ranked as the number two city for deadly DUI crashes. The per capita rate for fatal DUI crashes in Lakeland was 6.5 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents. Lakeland and Sarasota had the same number of DUI fatalities over the period between 2015-2017 with 19 per city, but Lakeland’s larger population made the rate lower. Lakeland also had the highest percentage increase in DUI fatalities with a 171% increase in fatalities over the course of three years.

St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg came in at number four for the deadliest DUI crashes per capita. The rate in St. Petersburg was 4.63 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents. The number of DUI crashes increased slightly, but the overall rate of deaths was 141% greater than the Florida average.

While it is the largest city in the Tampa Bay area, Tampa surprisingly ranked number seven among Florida cities with the deadliest DUI crashes. Tampa had a rate of 3.77 DUI deaths per 100,000 residents. In contrast to the other cities on the list, Tampa actually saw a more than 10% decrease in the number of DUI fatalities.
