Tampa, FL (2/12/2020) – A hit-and-run accident with a pickup truck left a 28-year-old bicyclist dead on US 301 last November. The truck driver has now been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and destruction of evidence.
The crash occurred on November 12 around 4:40 a.m. The Florida Highway Patrol states that Jacob Weinert, 28, was heading to work and riding his bike south along US 301 when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by Steven Duane Baker, 61. Baker hit Weinert from behind and then left the scene. Weinert died at the scene of the accident.
The Florida Highway Patrol received a call from Baker more than 24 hours after the accident saying that he hit something, but did not know what it was.
Police arrested Baker at his home and booked him into the Orient Road Jail. Investigators found his damaged 2003 Dodge pickup truck, which Baker admitted to spray-painting to cover up evidence.
