As ownership increases, the number of reported crashes involving Tesla vehicles has also risen. The key question for consumers is not whether Teslas are involved in crashes, but how frequently and how severely occupants are injured in Tesla crashes compared to other vehicles.

Florida Fatal Crash Data: 2019 Through 2023

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which collected data from 2019 through 2023, there were 62 total Tesla vehicles involved in fatal crashes in Florida during that five-year period.

Breakdown by model in Florida:

  • Model 3 – 33 fatal crashes
  • Model S – 14 fatal crashes
  • Model Y – 10 fatal crashes
  • Model X – 5 fatal crashes

These statistics for Tesla safety in Florida represent fatal crashes in which a Tesla vehicle was involved. They do not assign fault, nor do they calculate crash rates per vehicle registered. They simply reflect total fatal crash involvement.

Which Tesla Models Are The Safest?

When reviewing Florida fatal crash data, certain Tesla models appear more frequently in fatal crash reports than others. Without looking in depth at safety features and marketing, we can review fatal accident statistics involving Tesla vehicles to give an honest Tesla review on which models are safest.

Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model 3 is one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the United States, with about 192,440 being delivered in 2025. Its popularity means there are more Model 3 vehicles on the road than many other Tesla models available on the market.

Between 2019 and 2023, in Florida, the Model 3 was involved in 33 fatal crashes, accounting for more than half of all Tesla-related fatal crashes in the state during that time frame.

Higher total numbers may reflect higher sales volume rather than a higher risk rate per vehicle. Even so, the Model 3’s presence in Florida fatal crash data is significant.

Tesla Model S

Tesla Model S is a high-performance luxury sedan that is well known for its rapid acceleration capabilities. From 2019 through 2023, the Model S was involved in 14 fatal crashes in Florida, according to the NHTSA.

The US Fatality Analysis Reporting System fatal crash analysis has also reported a 5.8 fatal crash rate per billion vehicle miles for the Model S. For comparison, the overall U.S. vehicle average in that study was 2.8 fatal crashes per billion miles.

While this national fatal crash rate does not just include Florida alone, it provides context for how certain Tesla models compare on a per-mile basis.

Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y is another highly sought-after Tesla model. Between 2019 and 2023, in Florida, the Model Y was involved in 10 fatal crashes.

In national fatal crash data provided by ISeeCars, the Model Y was reported at 10.6 fatal crashes per billion vehicle miles, which is one of the highest fatality rates of any vehicle brand identified in that analysis.

As with other Tesla models, higher ownership rates and miles driven may influence total crash numbers. However, both Florida totals and national per-mile figures show the Model Y appearing prominently in serious crash statistics.

Tesla Model X

Tesla Model X was involved in 5 fatal crashes in Florida between 2019 and 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Although the fatality statistics are lower than those of other Tesla models in total fatal crashes, it still remains part of the overall statistics involving 62 fatal Tesla-related crashes documented in the state during this period. 

National Brand Level Statistics For Tesla Safety In Florida

On top of Florida fatal crash data, national insurance claim data provides insight into overall statistics that provide a Tesla review of accident frequency.

According to a LendingTree brand accident study analyzing driving accidents from January 1 through December 16, 2025. This data revealed that:

  • Tesla drivers were involved in 23.1 accidents per 1,000 drivers, one of the highest accident rates among the 30 vehicle brands included in the analysis.
  • When looking at total driving incidents, including accidents, DUIs, speeding violations, and other citations, Tesla drivers recorded 42.8 incidents per 1,000 drivers.

These Tesla reviews place the vehicle brand at the top of the ranking for accident involvement among major automotive brands during that study period. 

Driving Incident Rates by Brand

Data collected by LendingTree on a motor vehicle accident study conducted from January 1 through December 16, 2025, shows a wide variation in reported driving accidents across different vehicle brands.

In that analysis, Tesla drivers were involved in 42.8 total driving incidents per 1,000 drivers, which included accidents, DUIs, speeding violations, and other citations. That placed Tesla among the top 5 motor vehicle brands with higher overall accident counts compared to more popular brands.

By contrast, several other motor vehicle brands recorded notably lower accident rates per 1,000 drivers:

  • Chrysler drivers had 25.5 incidents, the lowest of any major brand in the study.
  • Cadillac drivers followed closely with 27.0 incidents per 1,000 drivers.
  • Mercury drivers had 27.9 incidents, which is also among the lowest overall.

Looking specifically at accident involvement, the study found that Tesla was near the top with 23.1 accidents per 1,000 drivers, but other motor vehicle brands clearly had lower accident rates:

  • Mercury recorded just 12.7 accidents per 1,000 drivers, which is the lowest rate among all brands analyzed.
  • Chrysler and Pontiac also had low accident rates, at 12.9 and 13.3 per 1,000 drivers, respectively.

These figures show how Tesla’s reported incident and accident rates compare with those of other motor vehicle brands in the same LendingTree dataset. 

Florida consistently ranks among the states with high traffic fatality totals overall. Various factors contribute to higher levels of traffic accidents and fatalities, including:

  • High-speed highways
  • Year-round driving
