One of the most common injuries that can occur when an individual is involved in a car accident is a back injury. There are several different ways that a back or spinal cord can be injured in a car wreck and typically these types of accidents require significant medical treatment and take an extended period of time to recover from. At times, the effects of these injuries can be permanent causing a person to be unable to work or care for their family in the same manner as before the accident.

If you live in the Tampa area of Florida and have suffered a back injury due to a car accident or some other type of accident such as slip and fall, it is imperative that you speak with an experienced personal injury lawyer near you. They will be able to help assess your case and make sure you receive the medical treatment you need. The costs of medical treatment can add up quickly and a back injury lawyer will be able to help you pursue the compensation needed to cover these and other expenses.

Common Back Injuries after a Car Accident

Suffering back pain after a car accident is a common experience for many car accident victims. In some cases, the discomfort is relatively minor, and symptoms will subside on their own after a matter of days. In other cases, back pain is a sign of a serious injury with long-term consequences. Some common back injuries that can occur after a car accident include:

HERNIATED DISC

The vertebrae of the back are separated by a series of discs that provide cushioning and allow for flexibility. In the event of trauma to the back, damage can be done to these tissues and a disc can be dislodged out of place. In some cases, the outer edge of a disc may also rupture.

Symptoms of a herniated disc can vary considerably depending on the location of the injury, but common symptoms include muscle weakness, tingling, numbness, and arm or leg pain.

COMPRESSION FRACTURES

Car accidents can also be responsible for fractures of the vertebrae of the back. Compression fractures consist of multiple cracks in the vertebrae and are more common in older adults.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, spinal fractures are typically classified based on the location of the injury. Fractures of the upper spine are considered thoracic fractures, while fractures of the lower spine are classified as lumbar fractures.

The most common symptom for a spinal compression fracture is pain. The pain can subside at times or could get worse over time but where a fracture is concerned it is unlikely to get better on its own. Other symptoms include difficulty bending over or twisting, a stoop or curvature of the back, and even gradual height loss.

SPINAL CORD INJURY

Your spinal cord is a bundle of nerves which is encased by your spine and controls the movements of almost every part of your body. Damage to the spinal cord can disrupt communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Depending on the location and extent of a spinal cord injury, symptoms may vary from partial loss of movement or sensation to total paralysis.

Symptoms of a spinal cord injury would include being unable to move or even feel your toes, feet, and legs, or hands and arms, depending on the injury site. A person suffering from a spinal cord injury could have experience muscle weakness, the inability to control their bladder and bowel function, and breathing problems.

LUMBAR AND THORACIC SPINE FRACTURES

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, fractures of the lumbar and thoracic spine are the most common types of spinal fractures. The main symptom of these injuries is moderate to severe pain.

When spinal fractures are caused by intense trauma in an event such as car accident, other injuries such as spinal cord damage or traumatic brain injury are often sustained as well.

BACK SPRAINS

Although a sprain may not seem as serious as a fracture or spinal cord injury, the recovery from these types of injuries can be extensive. Back sprains involve damage such as tears and over-extension of the back muscles and tendons.

The symptoms of a back sprain include stiffness or difficulty moving, and muscle cramping and spasms.

Treatment Options for Back Injuries

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help. Back injuries can cause chronic pain and mobility limitations. A serious back injury can make someone unable to work or perform the basic activities of daily living. Back injuries are frequently the result of someone’s negligence such as in a car accident or a slip and fall. If you suffer a back injury, it’s important that you seek the right treatment for your injury. Common treatment options for back injuries include:

SURGERY

Your doctor may suggest one of several different surgeries to help relieve pain caused by back injuries. Common types of back surgery include:

Diskectomy—a portion of the disc is removed to relieve pressure on the spine

Spinal Fusion—is the most common form of back surgery, it involves joining back vertebrae together to help limit how far nerves can stretch

Laminectomy—a small portion of bone is removed to increase the size of the spinal canal and relieve pressure

Foraminectomy—bone and other tissue are removed to expand the openings for nerve roots

Disc Replacement—a damaged spinal disc is removed and replaced with an artificial one

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Exercise can be an important part of relieving back pain. Depending on the circumstances, it may be one of the first treatments a doctor recommends. Physical therapy exercises should be tailored to your specific injury and condition. Maintaining regular appointments and keeping up with exercises at home are keys to achieving the maximum benefit from physical therapy.

PAIN RELIEF INJECTIONS AND MEDICATION

For lower back, hip, and leg pain caused by nerve pressure from a bulging disc, an epidural steroid injection may be used. These injections are non-invasive and usually provide temporary pain relief.

SPINAL DECOMPRESSION THERAPY

Spinal decompression is a type of motorized traction that can help relieve the pain associated with back injuries. Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine, changing its force and position. This takes the pressure off of spinal discs and can result in the retraction of bulging or herniated discs.
