Lakeland, FL (2/11/2020) – A highway worker was killed on Monday afternoon after being hit by a truck near the Polk Parkway in Polk County. The accident occurred around 12:14 p.m. at the 4000 block of Lakeland Highlands Road.
According to the Lakeland Police Department, Abraham Ira Remchuk, 42, was on the inside northbound lanes of the road performing survey work. Remchuk was then hit by a 2006 Ford F-150 truck driving north on Lakeland Highlands Road.
The driver, 19-year-old Bryce Warneke, claimed that she looked down momentarily at her speedometer and did not see Remchuk until it was too late.
The impact caused Remchuk to hit another passing car before falling onto the roadway. Warneke immediately stopped her truck and called 911. Emergency services rushed Remchuk to Lakeland Regional Health, where he later died from his injuries.
Investigators state that Remchuk was standing near surveying equipment and was wearing an orange vest prior to the accident. However, there were no road signs to indicate that a surveyor was working.
Police do not suspect alcohol or speeding to be a factor in the accident. The Lakeland Police Department is still investigating the crash.
