Mulberry, FL (2/25/2020) – An accident in Polk County left two pedestrians dead Monday night. The crash occurred on State Road 60 around 8:21 p.m. just east of Coronet Road.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the semi-truck, a 54-year-old male whose name has not been released, crossed the fog line and hit two male pedestrians. The pedestrians, 29-year-old Rafael Gandoy and 23-year-old Armando Melendez, were walking east of the paved right-of-way.

Gandoy died at the scene of the accident. Melendez had a faint pulse and was transported to Lakeland Regional Health, where he later passed away. The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with deputies.

During their initial investigation, State Road 60 was closed for nearly five hours. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the cause of the accident.
