South Port, FL (10/11/2019) – A man from Central Florida died in a crash Friday afternoon.

At around 3 pm, Jose Ramon Rivera, 63, drove in the left lane on State Road 77 near Lucy Lane. He was headed north. Around that same time, Weyman Edward Wheeler, 56, drove in the same direction in the right lane.

Florida Highway Patrol stated that Rivera attempted to switch lanes and struck the front of Wheeler’s vehicle. Rivera’s vehicle began to spin out and rolled over. Rivera died on the scene of the crash. Wheeler wore his seatbelt and did not have any injuries.

Police have stated alcohol had no role in the crash. FHP said that Rivera was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Our hearts go out to all of those impacted by this tragedy. Car crashes like this one occur far too often in Florida. It’s essential that fatal car rollovers be thoroughly investigated so that the cause of the collision can be understood, and the responsible party can be identified and, if warranted, held accountable.
