Third Teen of US 92 Crash Dies Over the Weekend

Hillsborough County, FL (2/24/2020) – A teenage passenger who was injured in an accident on US 92 this past Saturday has died, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Edgar A. Ortiz, 14, died from his injuries at Tampa General Hospital on February 23rd after being airlifted from the site of the accident.
The crash occurred on February 22nd at about 12:38 a.m. on US 92 near Turkey Creek Road. According to troopers, Camilo E. Mustacchio, 17, was driving a 2008 Ford Escape with his friends west on US 92 when he crossed the median and struck a 2005 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer driven by 61-year-old Petar Lakic.
The vehicles collided head-on, killing Mustacchio and one of his passengers, 15-year-old Lexi R. Lapointe. Ortiz, who was a passenger, survived the initial impact with life-threatening injuries but later died in the hospital. The driver of the tractor trailer was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the accident. They have so far determined that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
