University of Tampa Student Arrested After Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Bicycle Crash

Tampa, FL (3/5/2020) – A 22-year-old Tampa resident has been arrested after he killed a bicyclist and left the scene. The crash occurred on Wednesday around 7:00 p.m. on West Gray Street near North Gomez Avenue.
According to the Tampa Police Department, Seth Lapensohn was driving his 2016 Jeep Wrangler east on West Gray Street when he hit a bicyclist on the shoulder of the road. After hitting the bicyclist, Lapensohn left the scene of the accident for 50 minutes before returning and identifying himself as the suspect. The bicyclist, whose name has not been released, died at the scene.
Police promptly arrested Lapensohn when he returned to the scene. He smelled like alcohol and showed signs of impairment. A breath test showed that Lapensohn only had a blood alcohol level of 0.008, but he also tested positive on a drug recognition exam.
He faces charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident involving a death. Lapensohn is being held in the Hillsborough County Jail on a $15,500 bail.
